Meet Kara Sutton— branding guru, entrepreneur, devoted wife, and one of the most fashionable mothers around, and those are just her day jobs. She moonlights as one of the funniest people we've encountered. Comedy is in her DNA and we are patiently waiting for her to share the inside scoop on her next standup performance. Her witty sense of humor will leave you breathless. Her positivity radiates from her warm smile and innate ability to make everyone around her feel like the best version of themselves. She never misses a moment to give a pep-talk, and we appreciate her direct and blunt form of communication. She credits her work ethic and stamina to her days as a competitive Cheerleader —have you seen Cheer? It's no joke! Get to know Kara...
I AM KARA SUTTON AND I DEFINE CONFIDENCE AS BEING UNAFRAID TO DO YOUR OWN THING
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
Grew up in Orange County (Huntington Beach), lived in LA for over a decade, & then moved to Long Beach. Being in between OC & LA is the perfect spot for me.
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO?
I run a creative branding agency called Always Friday – doing everything from brand copywriting to social strategy to experiential event design for clients. I’ve been in advertising, media, and branding for 10 years now and my goal is always to create work that makes other brands jealous. I’ve been lucky to work on everything from Patrón to Target to Netflix.
WHY IS HAVING A HEALTHY GUT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
I follow my gut on almost everything in life so it’s truly important for me to feel connected to myself in a real way. If I’m not feeling well, something is off in my ecosystem. From raising my daughter to making business decisions, it all starts with trusting myself.
WHY THE CONFIDENCE CO MISSION RESONATE WITH YOU?
I believe women should take care of themselves and never feel bad for doing so. I love the idea of living confidently – having your glass of red wine and pasta and doing so in an unapologetically confident manner.
NAME YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT.
NAME THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE FOODS.
Sushi. Sushi. Sushi
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE?
Sausage soufflé – I can’t resist a hearty breakfast moment.
ANY MAJOR WELLNESS MOMENTS IN YOUR LIFE?
I started having crippling anxiety attacks when I turned 18 – mainly around feeling afraid to fail. This was 13 years ago when talking about anxiety wasn’t commonplace or stitched onto vintage t-shirts at Urban Outfitters. Going through that taught me to slow down, take care of myself, and learn to breathe. That’s when I found out my idea of wellness was really just practicing saying no to things that don’t serve me.
WHAT'S YOUR CURRENT SELF-CARE ROUTINE?
Watching real housewives with a face mask & a glass of wine OR a hot yoga class and a bath.
WHERE DO YOU GET OR DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
My friends, my husband, & my parents. My friends are incredible & smart entrepreneurs who always challenge me, my husband is the most passionate individual I know, and my parents are extremely hard working and successful.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 18-YEAR OLD SELF?
Don’t box dye your hair black. Ashlee Simpson is not that cool.
HOW HAVE YOU KEPT UP YOUR CREATIVITY DURING THIS TIME?
All of my clients keep me creative – from food brands to fashion, everyone is in a state of reinvention right now. Also making up games to entertain a 1 year old is a true test of your creativity…
HAVE YOU FOUND CREATING ART TO BE HELPFUL WITH EVERYTHING GOING ON? IF SO, HOW?
Does doing coloring books with my one year old count?
WHAT ARE IS ONE SELF-CARE RITUAL YOU’RE LEANING INTO FOR COMFORT? Probably carbs. Does that count as self-care? Just leaning into grilled cheese.
DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE, POEM OR SONG THAT YOU WOULD DEFINE AS YOUR ANTHEM?
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. And don’t be mean when you say it.
